Mirroring Emotions; Are Others Influencing Your Happiness?
The people you choose to spend your time with have an effect on your mood whether you want to believe it or not.
If you’ve spent time with someone who constantly complains, it’s likely you’ll walk away feeling drained and depleted.
This goes for a positive, upbeat person too. Socializing with someone that makes you laugh will leave you refreshed and feeling good about yourself.
This behaviour is what I call “mirroring emotions”.
Think of your friends, family and colleagues, and ask yourself:
- Who am I spending the day with?
- Who’s around me and putting their vibes, emotions, attitudes and moods on me?
- Who is influencing me?
- What emotional state do they tend to be in?
Instead of just allowing everyone to influence you, remember this so you can take control of your emotions:
- Choose to set the tone
- Decide how you want to feel and bring those emotions into the room
In setting the tone for yourself, you can then decide… I’m going into this room, it doesn’t matter if other people are in a bad mood, I’m going to do what I need to do today.
